On the Road with an Elvis Impersonator
"This is Bobby Love." After years of too many late-night rehearsals and too few gigs, I knew I would never be a rich and famous rock star. I was through with music and ready to bow out of the whole band scene. Then some guy named Bobby Love called and said he needed a bass player. "I do fifties, sixties, oldies stuff. And I do an Elvis tribute." An Elvis tribute ...

He Don’t Look Like Elvis is the unflinching, tragicomic true tale of the ups and downs of band life on the low end of the food chain, told from the viewpoint of the author, Frank Siraguso (aka Frankie Stone), a bass player for Elvis impersonator Bobby Love and his band, the Love Machine.

The band members try to maintain a straight face and an even keel in a traveling rock and roll fantasy circus. It was a fantasy fueled not only because Bobby and the band are capable of some knockout performances but also because the fans could never get enough of the King – alive, dead or otherwise. Audiences know Bobby isn’t Elvis but mob him anyway for scarves, autographs and kisses.

This was definitely not the pampered, plush, rock-star tour deluxe. No jets from city to city, no waiting limousines. This is the life of working musicians on the road playing in dive bars, staying in low-rent motels in small towns, lugging their own equipment and praying that the pickup truck and trailer got them to the next gig in one piece. After years of striving, the reality of playing in bars and living on the road became clear. It was time for a change.

"He Don't Look Like Elvis" is a comic valentine to every band that never hit the big time, which is 99.99% of all bands ever formed. Frankie Stone's tales of life on the road for side musicians playing back up for an Elvis impersonator are raw, candid -- and just too bizarre NOT to be true. Don't miss this wild ride!

I have known Frank for 50 years and I played in a band with him. Great guy great musician. Great memories. Dean
In He Don't Look Like Elvis, the glamour of rock-n-roll meets the potholes in the road. In a chronicle that's unsparing in its honesty, Siraguso takes readers on a road trip through a sub-genre of Rock -- the Elvis tribute group -- that features small Midwest towns whose streets roll up at dusk playing bars with names like Duke’s, Genova’s, The Chestnut Inn, or Torchlight.

Both the desire to play again and dissatisfaction with a five-year stretch as a city surveyor lead the author in the mid 1970s to play bass guitar in The Love Machine, backup band to Bobby Love, an Elvis Impersonator with a solid local following. Love's Elvis has all the charm and charisma of the original including jumpsuits and the King's wig -- except the expensive wig is parted on the wrong side, a fact true fans notice right away. And yet, Siraguso writes, “Somehow, we managed to create the excitement, enough for the audience to suspend belief. At times, I found myself wondering, is this what it was like to be Elvis? Is this what the Beatles talked about? Kesey too? It’s that palpable energy that moves in waves through an audience.”

And after a few weeks honing their sound in dives such as the notorious Kansas City Chestnut Inn (with bullet holes in the heavy door) the band goes on the road to small town midwest blink-and-you’ll-miss’em burgs. The vehicles include a death-trap truck (no horn, no speedometer, no gas gauge, no heater, no odometer, but plenty of exhaust to the camper where some equipment and two Love Machine members ride, and an astonishingly large bulb protruding from one tire, pulling an equipment trailer with a loose hitch.

The locals are both appreciative and scary, and between hole-in-the-wall (literally, a bathroom has a hole in the floor to piss in) gigs, endless searches for after-hours places to eat or get gas, motel rooms without water (or sometimes, replete with a kitchen!). Yet in spite of the travails, the Bobby Love and Love Machine groupies always turn up to cut the scarves “Elvis” hands out to the appreciative, and to buy the photos of Bobby for $4 (framed!).

The road, the weed, the booze, the late hours, the poor management, the days away from home take their toll. Siraguso (who’s always introduced by Bobby Love as Frankie Stone from Newport News because he couldn’t pronounce or remember “Siraguso”) heads back to college nursing a broken marriage and hopes for the future “As for me, my whole life was turning inside out. A weird show, a broken marriage - what more could I ask?”
He sure sounds like him! Great story about a musician's real life on the road. The guts, the glory and the ambition behind it all.
